Episode 56 | Clearing up the Mess of Book Writing
In this episode of the Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship, our expert, Alexa Bigwarfe shares the steps you need to take after you have written the book and are ready to get your book out to the world.“What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itself.” – Abraham Lincoln
I have already written a book, but I don’t know how to publish or market it. What are the next steps I need to take?
The first step is to determine your path to publishing (self-publish, pitch it to a publisher, or a hybrid route).
The hybrid route is a growing and budding industry and is really great for people that don’t want to self-publish and probably won’t get picked up from a traditional publisher. A hybrid press is like a traditional publisher but there is a fee to get the book published. This is a great option for first-time authors. It reduces the risk of publishing, but the result for the author is two-fold. They don’t have to worry about any of the publishing and in return for the fee for services partnership at the beginning generally, the royalties are going to be 60% or higher.
Criteria for Hybrid Publishers
The Independent Book Publishers Association has a great checklist of criteria for hybrid publishers to help protect you.
If you have to pay money to order copies of your book that is usually a red flag.
For entrepreneurs most often the best route is self-publishing.
There are self-publish assist publishers that will help make sure you have everything you need for a successful book like Write Publish Sell. They are also a huge asset because they can help your book look professional and fit the industry standards in a faster timeline.
Being the Expert
Enterpreneurs are using their books to prove themselves as an expert and to grow their audience.
The second step is to hire a publishing or book coach. They will help you manage the entire book writing and publishing process. There are many things that you need to know that you don’t even know you need to know. Hiring an expert allows you to focus on the book and marketing.

A book is an investment of time, money and energy. Usually, the goal of a book is future speaking engagements, building and growing your business.
