Episode 59 | Messy Podcasting … or Not

In this episode of the Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship, our expert, Audrey Bell-Kearney shares what steps you need to take if you are thinking about starting your own podcast.

“A lot of people listen to podcasts because they want to learn something and be entertained along the way.”
– Alex Blumberg

AUDREY bell-kearney

CEO of ABK Media Group
& Founder of PodChix International

How can I build, run, and grow a successful active podcast for more customers flowing in?

The first step is to decide exactly what your show is going to be about. The second step is deciding who you want to talk to. Third, decide which marketing platform you want to use. Audrey has seen great success by marketing with Pinterest.

What are some things that we need to do when starting a podcast?

Think about these questions to help create your direction. There are many little tiny things that you need to decide.

What is your topic? What are you passionate about?

Why are you starting a podcast? Many people start a podcast as a tool to help grow their business. Like in Audrey’s case the podcast may also be a business itself.

What other quetsions should you be asking yourself?

How often do you want to record and publish podcast episodes?

Do you want to interview people or not?

What do you want your podcast to do?

How long do you want your podcast episodes to be?

You need to be consistent and plan it all out. You have to be passionate about what you are talking about.

Podcasting the New Sales Funnel?

Podcasting is the new sales funnel, but you can have fun with it and make a huge difference. It is a lot more fun, entertaining and less messy!

Episode 58 | LinkedIn to the Mess

In this episode of the Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship, our expert, Kimberly Watkins-Swenk shares all the scoop about LinkedIn company pages.

“LinkedIn is no longer an online resume. It’s your digital reputation.”
– Jill Rowley

KIMBERLY watkins-swenk

Social Media & Content Strategist

I’ve heard that I should create a LinkedIn company page. Should I create one and what content should I be marketing?

Yes, LinkedIn has the highest organic reach and engagement rate of any social media platform. If you are looking to get the most out of your social media without paying any money then LinkedIn is the way you need to go. Set up a LinkedIn company page is rather easy and Kimberly’s e-book offers the steps to follow, best practices, hashtag strategies, and more. The key to getting the most organic reach is especially on LinkedIn is interacting with your connections. The more you interact with them from your company page the more they are going to see you in their feed.

If we are LinkedIn challenged or struggling with LinkedIn, how do we engage with our business page?

Follow the clients or businesses you are targeting from your company page. Then start interacting and networking with them and sharing valuable content. It is better to posts documents as a PDF on LinkedIn. It is helpful to share your work, any blog posts and showcase your speciality services and promotions. Having more interaction on LinkedIn will help your overall search results even on Google searches. In your company put 3 of your top keywords in your description to help on searches. LinkedIn also shows which keywords are trending to help you choose your keywords.

Should we create and share our own content or the content of others?

For LinkedIn, it is best to follow the rule of thirds. One third should be industry information. Another third should be your branded content and the last third should be your blog posts and articles. Company pages are getting more functionality on LinkedIn were before they were fairly limited. They are also ranking because there are fewer company pages than personal pages. On company pages, LinkedIn should have 3-5 hashtags but should change.

Episode 57 | Productivity Doesn’t Have to be Messy

In this episode of the Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship, our expert, Scott Maderer shares how we can be more productive.
“Always deliver more than expected.” – Larry Page

SCOTT maderer

Productivity Expert | Stewardship Coach

How can I be more productive without compromising my health and keeping away from anxiety and overwhelm?

Productivity really means getting the right things done.

You can do almost anything, but there is no possible way you can do everything.

There are things you can do to leverage your time and build efficiencies, but trying to cram everything in is not being productive. It is actually destructive and can tear down your health, create anxiety, frustration, and hatred.

Sometimes we need to show ourselves grace and listen to our bodies. That isn’t wasteful because you will be more productive since you took care of yourself.

Recognize how you are wired, so you can learn what works best for you.

It is alright to adjust and refine to create the systems that will work best for you.

Often resting and relaxing energize us to be more productive during the rest of our day.

We all have a body clock and it runs in different cycles for different people. Recognizing those peaks and valleys to your energy, being aware of them, and giving yourself permission to adjust your day when you can adjust things to fit in the flow of your energy. If you are a morning person put the most difficult tasks you need to get done in the morning. If you are an evening person don’t force yourself to do those tasks first thing in the morning.

It comes down to being aware and listening to what your body wants. Cut other things out that are not important. Everything you say yes to means you are saying no to something else.

“Your life is the result of choices you make. If you don’t like your life it is time to make better choices.”

Many people feel like they have to say yes to everything because they are going to miss an opportunity, something is going to go wrong, or someone will be mad. Usually, that is not true, so test it. Learn to say no in different and creative ways.

Productivity is in relation to your priorities and if your priorities are right you are going to be productive.

Episode 56 | Clearing up the Mess of Book Writing

In this episode of the Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship, our expert, Alexa Bigwarfe shares the steps you need to take after you have written the book and are ready to get your book out to the world.
“What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itself.” – Abraham Lincoln

ALEXA bigwarfe

Author | Publisher | Publishing Coach | Podcaster

I have already written a book, but I don’t know how to publish or market it. What are the next steps I need to take?

The first step is to determine your path to publishing (self-publish, pitch it to a publisher, or a hybrid route).

The hybrid route is a growing and budding industry and is really great for people that don’t want to self-publish and probably won’t get picked up from a traditional publisher. A hybrid press is like a traditional publisher but there is a fee to get the book published. This is a great option for first-time authors. It reduces the risk of publishing, but the result for the author is two-fold. They don’t have to worry about any of the publishing and in return for the fee for services partnership at the beginning generally, the royalties are going to be 60% or higher.

Criteria for Hybrid Publishers

The Independent Book Publishers Association has a great checklist of criteria for hybrid publishers to help protect you.

If you have to pay money to order copies of your book that is usually a red flag.

For entrepreneurs most often the best route is self-publishing.

There are self-publish assist publishers that will help make sure you have everything you need for a successful book like Write Publish Sell. They are also a huge asset because they can help your book look professional and fit the industry standards in a faster timeline.

Being the Expert

Enterpreneurs are using their books to prove themselves as an expert and to grow their audience.

The second step is to hire a publishing or book coach. They will help you manage the entire book writing and publishing process. There are many things that you need to know that you don’t even know you need to know. Hiring an expert allows you to focus on the book and marketing.

Episode 56 | The Mess of Human Feelings and Building Business

In this episode of the Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship, our Expert, Angela Henderson, Business Coach, shares about the importance of human to human marketing when you are trying to grow your business.
“At the end of the day people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou

ANGELA henderson

Therapist l Coach l Writer

How can I use my marketing to grow my business?

Angela highly recommends human to human marketing. Human to human marketing pertains to the experience and interaction that one faces with a particular brand. It is important to have both the experience and interaction pieces.

Human to Human Marketing

A big component of what businesses are missing right now is how they are making people feel. Businesses need to think of how they can inject human to human marketing in their own brand.

Check out the book The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann. In the book, they talk about creating value first, touching peoples’ lives, building networks, being real and ultimately you are going to become profitable. Through the go giver sales process you are having multiple experiences and interactions and people can feel the energy and that you actually care about them.

Ways to implement human to human marketing in your brand

    • Pick up the phone
    • Make the call and the connection
    • Offering a free 15-minute call to new connections can make you stand out amongst the competition
    • Conduct your own discovery calls. Your team can support you in other ways, but this is a great way to find out if you are a good fit.
    • Send new clients a personalized gift in the mail to welcome them.

It’s important to have multiple touchpoints to create that experience and interaction.

Benefits of human to human marketing:

    • Showing your unique point of differences.
    • People are less likely to ask for a refund because they have a personal connection.
    • Client retention is higher because they now have an emotional connection with you.
    • Long term these clients become your marketing through referrals.

Conversations = Conversions

Often people are scared to have those conversations, but if you are willing to have those conversations the conversions will ultimately come.

People love the personal touch like a hand-written card or small gift and these can be simple and automated.

If you don’t make your customers feel special and validated you are going to lose them to a company that does.

Episode 54 | The Mind is a Messy Messy Place

In this episode of the Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship, our Expert, George Carroll, Author and Speaker, shares about the huge impact mindset can have on your business and your life.
“Once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change along with it.” – Steve Maraboli

GEORGE carroll

Author | Speaker

Can changing your mindset really improve your business bottom line?

Absolutely, yes! Mindset tends to be the messiest of all back-ends.

What would you say consistently helps create the results that we create in our lives and businesses?

Be Consistent

Our consistent actions create consistent results. Energy produces action that produces and drives results. Our thinking patterns and thoughts we think create the emotions we feel which create the consistent actions we take which create the consistent results.

We grow up with these limiting beliefs, so anything we find pain or resistance to we are going to push away. If you have money limiting beliefs you are going to push it away. We often self sabotage.

Sheila recommends the Compound Effect and 5 Second Rule books.

Two Steps Toward Our Goal

Why do we find ourselves taking two steps forward toward a goal or a dream and then taking two steps back?

The primary reason is that our brain has two major priorities: safety and energy conservation.

As an entrepreneur when we are going after our goals and dreams we are forced to step out of our comfort zone. The minute we do that our brain sends off a red flag because it wants us safe and to conserve energy.

When energy drops the chances of survival also drop, so the brain compensates.

When we think about our goals it triggers the motivation center of our brain but also triggers the fear part too.

Fear

The fear mechanism is designed to help us scan the environment to see if there is any threat or danger around that could kill us. If you stew in fear too long you come up with these fear-based stories and worse case scenarios and then procrastinate.

Any time we are thinking about goals and dreams we want to achieve immediately the brain is going to trigger off some fear so that we can scan the environment for potential threats.

Self-Sabotage

One way we self-sabotage is that fear backs us into a corner in a comfort zone. Our values and beliefs drive our decisions.

The other way we self-sabotage is with internal conflicts with values and beliefs. Familiarity and comfort can become a value we learn growing up.

Our businesses force us to grow and step out of our comfort zone. We are often at odds because we need to grow our business, but we also value comfort.

Win the War

Once we recognize our fear and internal conflict, how do we win that war and overcome them?

Personal development should be such a high value for entrepreneurs because we can only go so far with will power and using our cognitive brain.

The challenge with these values and beliefs is that they are stored in the unconscious mind and we unconsciously run these habits and patterns over and over again without even thinking about it.

Change the Unconscious

We have to learn how to change the unconscious patterns. You have to learn how to utilize processes and exercises internally that can help you get aligned versus create those conflicts.

Get clear on your current values based on where you are and align them with your vision, mission, and goals not the values you took on from childhood.

Vision and Mission

What are the values that are most important for you to operate from now that are related to your future goals, vision and mission?

Come up with a quick definition for each one that allows you to write it down every day. Writing it down every day helps you to wire it in stronger. Instead of being invisibility influenced by old beliefs and values you are consciously digging those values you want to get aligned with into your unconscious.

Episode 53 | Are you a Messy “Putter-Offer”?

In this episode of the Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship, our Expert, Dave Charbonneau, Business Growth Specialist, shares his advice for having the time to run and grow your business.
“Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” – Winston Churchill

DAVE Charbonneau

Business Growth Specialist

Help! I am running out of time. I spend so much time running my business, I don’t have time to grow my business. What do I do?

It is almost a catch 22. If you don’t grow your business you start to go backward. If you start taking time away from your current customers to grow then your level of service and quality goes down.

Identify Your Productivity Type

First, identify your productivity type. There are four types: sooner, hipsters, chunkers, and sneakers.

Sooners

Sooners are always waiting for some event to grow their business or take their next step. Don’t be a sooner – just start!

Hipsters

Hipsters are don’t have a to-do list. They are just shooting from the hip. Hipsters are good at getting a lot done very quickly. They tend to grow quickly and grow to the point where they no longer have time to grow.

Chunkers

Chunkers are the most successful productivity type over the long haul. They will take an hour, day or more to do a project. They use chunks of time to complete projects.

Sneakers

Sneakers are excited to have five minutes to sneak in a quit e-mail or add to a project. They can get off on the wrong tasks and end up not being very productive.

Solution

The key is 15 minutes a day to grow your business.

If you are struggling to find the time, you may need to get up 15 minutes earlier each day. Find and commit to 15 minutes a day where you are doing nothing but growth tasks. Become a sneaker and sneak in at least 15 minutes each day.

Check out Mel Robbin’s book, The 5 Second Rule, that talks about productive and destructive procrastination.

Find out what you are doing that is keeping you from being productive and then sneaking in those 15 seconds.

Episode 52 | How to Not Have Messy Facebook Ads

In this episode of the Messy Back-End of Entrepreneurship, our Expert, Amanda Goldman-Petri, Online Marketing Coach, teaches her 3 steps to a wholesome Facebook Ads strategy.

“Strategy is about setting yourself apart from the competition. It’s not a matter of being better at what you do—it’s a matter of being different at what you do.”
– Michael Porter

AMANDA goldman-petri

Online Business Coach

I have run a few Facebook Ads with little response. How do I make Facebook ads work best for my business?

Facebook Ads are technical and require a lot of strategy.

You may choose to delegate this task out to a Facebook Ads manager.

What goes into creating Facebook ads that convert?

3 steps to a wholesome Facebook Ads strategy that generates leads and sales:

The top of the funnel – type of ads that you run that build up an engaged audience that you can tap into later to get people to opt-in.

Awareness Ads

If you want to create ads that are lower cost per lead you can build up an audience using top of funnel ads which are awareness and authority ads.

These are content ads where you target interests, lookalike audience and you send out ads that are just content. These ads are meant to help your audience become aware of their problems.

Content ads that help them become aware of the possibilities of solving their problem and also help them become aware of the path to get to the possibilities.

Ads that help them become aware of how you can help them solve their problem and that they can know, like and trust you. It is per content with no call to action.

Action Ads

Next, you have a warmer audience to target with action ads. Action ads are where you are getting them to actually take action in your funnel such as opt-in.

For these ads, you want to mix it up with some that address emotional motivations, logical motivations, and ethical motivations that people might have to opt-in.

Agitation Ads

Next, you want to agitate that problem with re-targeting ads by reminding them of the problem that they need to solve. You will also assure them of all the objections that they might have.

Assurance Ads

Personal branding – you have to let them get to know you. People want to work with other people.

Having all these angles (awareness ads, action ads, agitation ads, assurance ads) allow you to scale up with a smaller budget.

Don’t run an ad to just get likes on your Facebook page. If you want to be getting a return on your ads you need to run the ad to an opt-in page (free gift) or a sales funnel.

What tools do I need to create higher quality videos for myself and my clients?

We often get caught up in the gear, tools, equipment, and resources when the message is the most important.

All those things are important, but the number one way to make higher quality videos is to have a higher quality message.

We are going to talk about equipment because it definitely helps create high-quality productions.

The core essence of what you need is something you already have – your smartphone. You have the ability to create high-quality videos wherever you go.

If you have a modern smartphone you are good to go!

  • A smartphone is technically ALL you need, but there are some accessories that can be useful.
  • If we want to make a business video and you want to keep the phone stable you may need a tripod. Sheryl recommends a basic tripod from Amazon. You will need to get a Smartphone bracket or mount for the tripod. Make sure you have the right bracket to fit your phone. Make sure it is high enough if you plan on standing.
  • Another great tool Sheryl recommends if you are on location is the DJI Osmo Mobile great for high quality on location videos. They even offer an entire kit for shooting video on location. If you can’t buy it all at once, you can buy one thing at a time until you have everything you need.
  • Grab Sheryl’s Video Creation Toolkit at www.sherylfreegift.com. This amazing resource includes suggestions for on-location, Smartphone and laptop video recording.

Remember it doesn’t need to be fancy and don’t overcomplicate it. Use your smartphone and just get started.
